Senior Research Scientist, The Fitzwilliam Museum and Hamilton Kerr Institute, University of Cambridge – Scadenza 21 January 2024

Exciting opportunity for a scientist equally interested in collections-based research and the teaching of conservation science!
Based at the Fitzwilliam Museum and part time at the Hamilton Kerr Institute, the Senior Research Scientist will work with staff at the Fitzwilliam Conservation and Science Division, performing and developing scientific research on paintings, works on paper, books, illuminated manuscripts, objects, and antiquities in the Fitzwilliam collection, as well as with staff at the Hamilton Kerr Institute (HKI), a department of the Fitzwilliam Museum based in Whittlesford just outside Cambridge, which is a leading centre for teaching and research in paintings conservation and technical studies.
The purpose of the role is to design, manage, supervise and execute technical investigation projects in accordance with the Museum's strategic priorities and the University's national and international reputation. The role holder will have a solid knowledge of conservation science, and (organic) chemistry and is familiar with/can apply non-invasive techniques including MA-XRF, FTIR, FORS, Raman, UV-Vis-NIR, as well as analysis of micro-samples and cross-sections of objects/paintings (microscopy, SEM-EDX, HPLC, etc). The Senior Research Scientist will also develop and teach a science curriculum for the Masters of Easel Painting Conservation Programme, and contribute to other educational initiatives. In this way they make a major contribution to the University's priorities of research, teaching, impact and outreach; to international, national and regional initiatives; and to the Museum's strategic plan and audience needs.
